We’re partnering with our friends at the New Canadians Centre (NCC) to deliver this mash-up program featuring personal storytelling and cultural food-sharing. NCC’s Living Library aims to share human stories of immigration and integration by highlighting diverse and compelling stories of transition, settlement and belonging.
We’ll begin each event with a potluck featuring spices from our Spice Club Take-away kits. Feel free to join the potluck or just the talk which starts at 7:00 pm.
Attendees will have first dibs on the next month’s kits!
February Topic: Two Daughters, a Decision, and a New Chance to Live
In 1992, Aruasy and Rafael welcomed their first daughter during Venezuela's first coup attempt. Over the next 18 years, as political changes unfolded in their native country, they grew concerned about their daughters' future. Eventually, they decided to send their daughters to Canada as international students. However, as the situation in Venezuela deteriorated, it became clear that the girls could not return home. The couple made the life-changing decision to join their daughters in Canada in 2020. Now, in Peterborough, Aruasy shares their Canadian adventure, discussing the experiences, challenges, and joys they have encountered along the way.
