We've joined forces with our friends at the New Canadians Centre (NCC) for an exciting program that blends personal storytelling and cultural food-sharing. The NCC's Living Library is dedicated to sharing the human stories of immigration and integration, emphasizing diverse and captivating tales of transition, settlement, and belonging.
Each event kicks off with a potluck, where we'll feature spices from our Spice Club Take-away kits. Throughout the series, we'll highlight a different spice at each gathering. You're encouraged to cook something using that specific spice and bring it to share during the potluck. Alternatively, you can simply join us for the engaging talk, which begins at 7:00 pm. Attendees will have first dibs on next month’s Spice Club Kits!
April: El Salvador | Spice: Sesame Seed
"A Leap of Faith..." - A Journey of Love, Hardship, and Resilience
The best gift Patricia Orantes ever recieved was a love of travelling, exploring new cultures and languages, inspired by the teachings and support of her parents. That love took Patricia across the globe as an explorer, student, and eventually a lawyer. In 2011, Patricia took A Leap of Faith, moving to Canada to build a life with her Canadian partner. Settling in the Northumberland region, she quickly found life in Canada was not what she initially expected. Despite a long career in the legal field, Patricia was not able to practise law in Canada. She struggled to find work, battled feelings of loneliness, and soon, her marriage became strained. Her leap of faith takes us on a journey of love, hardship, and ultimately resilience. Today, she proudly says "Northumberland is a place I can call home."
